….I hope you enjoy your visit!
Building this website has been a labour of love - an enjoyable process, but also inevitably a slightly strange experience, as it has required me to focus so relentlessly on myself (in sharp contrast to the relative anonymity of working as part of a large multi-disciplinary team when delivering architectural projects). When doing this it is easy to start finding fault in the work, and to begin questioning whether all the parts tell a coherent story.
Now it’s done, however, I have reached the conclusion that the broad range of purpose, subject, medium, and tone that characterises the work I have included is fundamental to who I am and why I do what I do, and is therefore something that should be embraced, not downplayed. Sometimes work that at first glance appears lightweight and frivolous carries greater significance when seen in the wider context of my work as a whole (and sometimes it really is just a bit of fun). To have squeezed my work into the shape of a standard marketing website would have been much more inappropriate.
In short - the sprawl is the point.
What has emerged therefore is something designed to grow and evolve over time, which when viewed as a whole forms a kind of self portrait. Is it ‘good’ art / architecture / design? I only present it because I believe in it, and I certainly hope it will reach some kind of audience, but I’m realistic about what is likely to be achievable - simple recognition of my unique genius by an imagined viewer isn’t really my intention!
Each creative project we embark upon as an individual can seem too small to be of significance when considered in isolation amidst the overwhelming maelstrom of our lives and the times we live in, especially in a short attention span world characterised by a thirst for the next distracting novelty. By bringing everything together in one place I hope to give the work the weight not to be washed away.
I aim to expand this site further over time, potentially including an archive of work from throughout my earlier life that is currently secreted away in drawers and dusty portfolios. Some of this work may be a bit ropey - I’ll try not to present it as something it isn’t.
Perhaps most importantly, I see this website as a record of my attempts to continue to have a voice and a purpose in the face of the progress of my Parkinson’s, including how I adapt my working practices in order to prolong the window of opportunity for me to do what I love. Documenting this may in future involve the inclusion of work that seems crude by comparison to that which preceded it. I am already acutely aware of the gradual decline in my physical capabilities, and have begun to develop strategies to overcome the impacts of my condition. But once again I see documenting this process as central to the purpose of this project, rather than as an embarrassment.
So welcome! If you like what you see I’d love to hear from you, and if you don’t, please remember that I’m a typical vain, over-sensitive Artist/Architect/Designer, and keep your thoughts to yourself!
And finally, please note that no work contained on this website has been produced using generative AI, and that no material produced by generative AI has been incorporated into it, or was used as reference material in its creation.
